Last week, Blue Bottle Coffee in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, inaugurated a restored Urania, a lever-operated Faema espresso machine. This one was built in 1958. If a machine can have karma, 52 years of making espresso should accrue some cosmic good will.

When Blue Bottle Coffee decided to plant slow-drip roots in New York City asphalt earlier this year, I was excited, sure, but such scoops are better left to the barista trackers. It wasn’t until a few weeks later, when James Freeman (that’s Mr. Blue Bottle to you) told me about the second phase of his Williamsburg invasion that the mania hit. He’d be bringing the pastry program to Brooklyn in the fall, he said.
